A Day in the Life of Pre-service Teachers
Honing the Future
by France John Formaran
“Education would be much more effective if its purpose is to ensure that by the time they leave school every boy and girl should know how much they do not know and be imbued with the desire to know it.”
-Sir William Haley

Future Filipino educators are indeed need to be revitalized in order to create teachers that will help towards attaining the goal of the Philippine education—to educate Filipino youth towards nation building and one way to do it is through a pre-service teachers’ convention.

The Philippine Association for Teachers and Educators-Region IV-A Calabarzon Chapter conducted its 10th PAFTE IV-A Seminar and Quiz Bee for Pre-service Teachers on September 22, 2017 at Sta. Rosa Sports Complex, Sta. Rosa City, Laguna with the theme, “Revitalizing the Filipino Educators”.

It was 8am in the morning when we arrived at the event’s venue, I was mesmerized by the number of participants who gathered in the said event since it was my first time to attend such. It was just amazing to see a lot of today’s students aspiring to be teachers like us, it made me think that Filipinos are indeed great teachers because almost 56 schools from different private and public colleges and universities attended the said event that made me feel proud that I had a chance to be included on this kind of pre-service teacher’s seminar.

The program started at 10am by welcoming the delegates and other program preliminaries such as singing of the Philippine National Anthem, PAFTE Hymn, opening remarks of the PAFTE IV-A Chairperson— Dr. Mercedes A. Macarandang and the welcoming message of the city mayor of Santa Rosa— Hon. Dan S. Fernandez. It was then followed by the acknowledgement of the participants, statements of the purpose and the seminar proper.

It was then followed by the words of Dr. Emmylou B. Yanga, CHED $A Director who discussed some of the changes in the Philippine Education System and why is it important to revitalize our future teachers.

Further, the seminar entitled “Roadmap towards Professional Teaching” was discussed and presented by the guest speaker—Dr. Diosdado M. San Antonio. It covers different topics and areas about being an effective and professional teacher. Some issues and solutions in the curriculum and teaching process were also addressed. The said seminar was ended by the awarding of the certificate. Subsequently, after the seminar, the participants—students and faculty members took their lunch and had a certain time to unwind and be ready for the Quiz bee competition on the next few hours.
At the moment of the second part of the program all quiz bee participants are being called one by one by the Quiz bee masters. After a few minutes of several roll calls of the different schools and the showcasing of talents of each student from various schools, the most awaited event had started—regardless of the weather and heavy spitting rain outside, there’s a burning tension inside the sports complex as the participants compete in the most awaited Region IV-A Calabarzon Quiz bee.

The surrounding was getting hotter and hotter as the competition ran, but what we felt inside us was the opposite of it because it’s like we’re outside the Sports Complex being washed by the rain, quivering as if we’re already eaten by nervous and it was entirely invading our inner souls.
The whole experience was indeed to remember, we are glad to be given such opportunity. Thanks to our quiz bee coach Ms. Lei Alaiza Lei Lebantino, our Program Head, Mr. Lawrence Oliver Paunil as well as to our College Dean, Mrs. Mary Rose Cabangon for supporting us and given us a chance to be part of the said event.
